Ritisettennali

I disciplinanti sono così chiamati, perché fanno uso di un antico strumento di tortura la 'la disciplina' che consiste in un gruppo di strisce metalliche, unite da una catenella con la quale si percuotono le spalle. Tale pratica era usata dal primo movimento delle confraternite come lo conosciamo oggi. Iniziò nel XI secolo quindi dopo l'anno 1000 come fratelli battenti, mentre i 'disciplinanti' nacquero a Perugia nel 1260; il movimento fu di preminente carattere spirituale e penitenziale. I confratelli si flagellavano durante le cerimonie pubbliche e le processioni; il sangue sparso era il segno della loro penitenza, e il coinvolgimento spirituale dei fedeli era molto forte. Furono i frati Cappuccini, e in secondo piano i Gesuiti a far nascere e sviluppare questa corrente.
Nei riti settennali i disciplinanti hanno anche il compito secondario e occasionale di un vero e proprio 'servizio d'ordine', facendosi largo tra gli spettatori, che nelle stradine anguste del centro storico possono eventualmente ostruire il passaggio del corteo rionale. Presumibilmente molti disciplinanti che sfilano durante le processioni infrasettimanali dei rioni sfileranno, poi, come battenti nella domenica successiva, giorno della processione generale.

The governing are so called because they use an ancient instrument of torture, the 'discipline' which consists of metal strips, connected by a chain with which they beat their backs. This practice was used by the first movement of the brotherhoods as we know it today.
